DRESS
Riding to hounds is steeped in tradition. In the Santa Ynez Valley, We are reproducing a traditional form of sport and therefore, we make every effort to adhere to the forms of this tradition. It is a great source of satisfaction to know that we are properly attired and understand the meaning of proper dress.
Ratcatcher
This consists of almost any hacking attire, traditionally worn during cub hunting or on days designated by the Masters, including Wednesdays.
Head cover: Hunt cap with chin strap (ribbons up) or hunting derby.
Coat: A "hacking jacket" of tweed or linen in muted colors.
Vest (Optional): Canary or tattersall.
Shirt/Tie: Ratcatcher or white shirt with tie. Tie should be necktie or colored stock for men and women, though ladies may wear a choker with their riding blouses.
Breeches: Rust, grey, or beige (never white).
Boots: Tan or black, dress field, or Newmarket. Jodhpurs and paddock boots acceptable for juniors only.
Crop: Optional.
Spurs: Short neck. Rowels optional, but must be small.
Formal Black
This attire should be worn by those who do not wear scarlet.
Head cover: Hunt cap with chin strap (ribbons up) or hunting derby.
Coat: Black Melton. If entitled by permission of the Masters, black SYVH hunt buttons should be worn. Ladies granted the privilege may wear hunt colors on their collars.
Vest: Canary or tattersall. Brass SYVH buttons only if authorized to wear them.
Shirt or jersey: Suitable for stock tie.
Tie: Stock in plain white or palest yellow. No other colors: no patterns. .
Stock pin: Plain gold, worn horizontally.
Breeches: Beige or Canary (never white).
Boots: Plain black. Ladies granted colors may wear patent leather tops.
Gloves: Yellow, white string, or leather.
Whip: Hunting whip or crop.
Scarlet
This is reserved for Masters, staff, and authorized male members of the hunt.
Head cover: Hunt cap with chin strap, ribbons up (down for Masters or Huntsman), or top hat.
Coat: Scarlet, with rounded corners and brass hunt buttons. Masters and hunt servants wear square corners.
Vest: Buff, canary, or tattersall with brass SYVH hunt buttons.
Tie: Stock, white only, with large gold stock pin worn horizontally.
Breeches: White.
Boots: Black with brown tops. Tabs sewn on but not sewn down.
Gloves: String, or leather.
Whip: Hunting whip with stag handle and thong.
